Everyone agrees — 62-year-old youngster Bob Woeste is the best of the bunch.
But 87-year-old George Lenihan can still pull off a surprise or two.
The oldest member of the Corporate Seniors League at Benson Park recently sank the first ace of his career on the 110-yard sixth hole using an 11 wood.
“It was a real fluke,'' Lenihan said.
Lenihan said he isn't a very good golfer. But he enjoys the challenge and companionship.
He plays twice a week; in the Monday league at Benson Park and in the Friday Seniors League at Dodge Park in Council Bluffs.
The eight golfers in the Seniors League have been together for 16 years. Lenihan was part of the original group that started 26 years ago, around the time he retired from Union Pacific.
All eight also golf together on Monday, part of a larger group of 16. That bunch has played together about 15 years.
“We're all members of St. Pius X parish and have all been running together, playing volleyball, softball and golf, for years and years and years,'' said Jim Burns, 78.
They got started in the Pius men's league 35 years ago but switched to day leagues as they began retiring.
Just as they've done after most games they've played together, the group celebrated Lenihan's ace at Danny's Bar and Grill, where Lenihan bought a round.
Lenihan likes to golf during the week. He doesn't go out on the weekends, when he says the “good'' golfers are out.
But Burns and Jeff Nielsen, the assistant pro at Dodge, said Lenihan is much better than he thinks.
“For a guy 87 years old, he's pretty good,'' Burns said.
Lenihan, who was born on 2-22-22, said he wasn't too excited about his ace, even though it was his first.
“If I could hit a real good drive,'' he said, “I would be much happier.''
