LINCOLN (AP) — Twenty-one students and three adult chaperones from St. Edward, Neb., were at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., when a gunman opened fire, shooting and killing a guard. None from the Nebraska group was hurt.
St. Edward High School history teacher Aaron Martin said the group had just finished the tour when the shooting began. He said he, another chaperone and six students were in the museum at the time. The others were waiting outside.
Greg Scheffler of St. Edward said his daughter Morgan, a freshman at the high school, called him after the shooting to say she was OK.
The students were in Washington, D.C., for a field trip. They were scheduled to continue on to New York on Wednesday night.
