MCCOOK, Neb. (AP) — The McCook City Council will consider renaming the southwest Nebraska town's airport in honor of one of its native sons, U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson.
The council plans to discuss the idea at its meeting tonight. If the council agrees to it, the airport would be renamed the McCook “Ben Nelson'' Regional Airport.
But it's not clear how much support the idea has. Earlier this year, the McCook Airport Advisory Board talked about renaming the airport to honor Nelson, but that board decided not to advance the idea.
Nelson, a Democrat, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. Before that he served as Nebraska's governor from 1991 to 1999.
