Boosalis service Friday

LINCOLN (AP) — A memorial service has been scheduled for former Lincoln Mayor Helen Boosalis.

It is set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at First-Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln.

Boosalis, the first woman elected mayor of Lincoln and a candidate in a historic gubernatorial race, died Monday morning at a Lincoln hospice. She was 89.

In 1986, Boosalis was defeated by Republican Kay Orr in the nation’s first woman-versus-woman gubernatorial election, losing 53 percent to 47 percent.

Boosalis is survived by her husband, Mike Boosalis, in Lincoln; daughter Beth Boosalis Davis of Evanston, Ill.; and two grandsons.
