Rep. Smith's playing time scant

By Joseph Morton
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., found himself riding the bench Wednesday night for much of his debut in the Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game.

The Gering lawmaker donned a uniform from the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers for the traditional summer contest between Capitol Hill Democrats and Republicans. Smith served as a pinch runner twice during the game, according to spokesman Charles Isom.

Smith was stranded on second base one time and knocked in for a run the other.

Perhaps the GOP should have given Smith a shot at the starting lineup. The Republicans lost the game 15 to 10, their first defeat since 2000.
