Accessorizing: Devils can throwbacks

The Barry Bonds-era throwbacks worn by Arizona State earlier this week will be stowed away permanently, deep in the confines of the Sun Devils' equipment room.

After falling to Texas 10-6 while wearing the maroon V-neck pullovers and lemon drop caps, ASU staff said the get-up — a replica of the team's mid-1980s uniform — hasn't been much of a good-luck charm.

“We wore them the last time we were in Omaha, and we lost to (the University of California at) Irvine,” said Randy Policar, ASU sports information director.

ASU dropped the game against the Anteaters 8-7 in 10 innings.

“The team voted to wear them before the game, but I think it's safe to say we're not going to wear them for a while.”

The maroon tops with yellow and white trimming caught many fans in the stands off guard. But it was the radiant yellow hats and team colored stirrups that called for a second look.

“I'm kind of a jersey aficionado, so I like them,” Policar said. “I know some people that don't, though.”

Bonds, who starred in Tempe from 1983 until 1985, wore very similar threads, with the distinguished gold “Devils” script across the chest.

Along with its retro get-up, Arizona State brought four other jersey combinations to Omaha. Traditional maroon, white and grey hang in the team's closet, and most of the combinations would be rolled out if the Sun Devils could keep producing wins, Policar said. — Ross Boettcher
