Cardinals Francis George of Chicago and Justin Rigali of Philadelphia are among the dignitaries expected to attend the July 22 installation of George J. Lucas as Omaha archbishop.
The Mass of installation will be at 2 p.m. at Omaha's St. Cecilia Cathedral. An outdoor reception will follow. Because of limited seating at the cathedral, the installation events will be private, the Rev. Joseph Taphorn, chancellor of the archdiocese, said Saturday in a statement.
However, the service will be televised live on the EWTN network, streamed over the Internet and broadcast on Spirit Catholic Radio, 102.7 FM. Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the pope's representative in the United States, also is expected to attend the installation Mass, as well as bishops and priests from across the country.
Elected officials and clergy from other faiths are among the guests invited to a private 7 p.m. prayer service July 21 at St. Cecilia.
Lucas will follow his installation with a series of public Masses across the archdiocese: July 26, 9:30 a.m., St. Cecilia Cathedral; Aug. 2, 2 p.m., St. Mary Church, Norfolk; Aug. 9, 2 p.m., St. Patrick Church, O'Neill; and Aug. 16, 2 p.m., St. Isidore Church, Columbus. Lucas, currently bishop of the Springfield, Ill., diocese, will succeed Archbishop Elden F. Curtiss, who has been Omaha archbishop since 1993.
