The ink from Jeff Koterba's pens resulted in accolades at the region's newest journalism competition this past weekend.

The Omaha World-Herald cartoonist was in Tulsa, Okla., for the first Great Plains Journalism Competition. He was named winner of the first-place award in editorial cartooning for a June 3, 2008, cartoon.

Koterba also was named a finalist in the competition's narrative storywriting division for a May 2008 series titled “Ink and Ash.”

“Jeff sets a high standard for himself, which is reflected in the national syndication of his cartoons,” said Geitner Simmons, editor of World-Herald's editorial page. “Jeff well deserves this latest recognition of his talents as a cartoonist and writer.”

The eight-state competition awards work from area newspapers, magazines and Web sites and recognized more than 100 winners from Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Arkansas and Missouri. Judges included members of the press clubs in the Denver and Cleveland areas.
