Family and friends gathered June 19 in South Bend, Neb., to celebrate both Father’s Day and the 80th birthday of Bob Mahoney.

The Omahan marked the occasion by enjoying a favorite pastime: water skiing.

He also regaled the gathering with stories about his youth, like the time he fell out of a car going 50 mph and the time he ran away from the hospital after his tonsillectomy.

A graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs and Creighton University’s pharmacy school, Mahoney served in the Air Force in the 1950s and was director of pharmacy at Methodist Hospital when he retired in 1989.

He keeps fit by exercising at a gym and square dancing with his wife, Beverly.

He has been married 52 years and is the father of three and grandfather of seven. All made it to his birthday celebration.
