HARRISON, Neb. (AP) — Sioux County commissioners have launched a search for a new sheriff to replace Jim Costello, who resigned following his convictions for filing false reports.
Costello was convicted in Dawes County Court in May of filing a false stolen vehicle report and falsifying public documents.
Prosecutors say Costello broke the law in an attempt to help his daughter get a pickup awarded to his former son-in-law in a divorce settlement.
Costello submitted his resignation last week, which took effect Wednesday.
The county is taking applications through July 31 and will review applications at their Aug. 3 meeting.
Costello is set to be sentenced on July 21, but has appealed his conviction.
