WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Bellevue Mayor Ed Babbitt was hospitalized Sunday after suffering a potentially life-threatening heart attack that left him unresponsive, according to multiple people with knowledge of the emergency call.

Bellevue rescue crews were called to Babbitt's home late Sunday morning after Babbitt suffered an apparent cardiac arrest. An ambulance crew brought him to Midlands Hospital in Papillion. On Monday afternoon, hospital officials confirmed that Babbitt had been a patient but would not comment further.

City Council members and other elected officials in Sarpy County began receiving inquiries Monday about Babbitt's medical condition.

Babbitt, 70, a retired certified public accountant, defeated two-term mayor Jerry Ryan in 2006 after having served 24 years on the Bellevue City Council.

City Councilman Gary Mixan is acting mayor.
