Golf Notes: Omaha's Marchese in quarters

Susan Marchese of Omaha advanced to today's quarterfinals of the Nebraska women's match-play tournament without playing a first-round match Monday at the Kearney Country Club.

Marchese, a 17-time state champion, was medalist in the qualifying round with a 73 and received a first-round bye in the 16-player bracket. Only 15 signed up for the championship flight.

Winners of first-round matches were state stroke-play champion J.C. Stevenson and Abby Bartlett of Grand Island, Kayla Knopik of Papillion, Jane Pohlman and Armana Christensen of Omaha, Julie Hall of Norfolk and Anne Robertson of Columbus.

Semifinal matches are this afternoon, with the 18-hole final starting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Mullin's 69 leads first qualifier

Rob Mullin of Omaha, with a 3-under-par 69 Monday at Tiburon, had the low score in the first of five qualifying events for the 101st Nebraska Amateur. Among the 34 who advanced was former state champion Pete Godwin of Omaha.

The next qualifier is today at Highlands in Lincoln, where 51 golfers will play for 29 spots. Wednesday, it's 40 golfers at Meadowlark Hills in Kearney for 23 spots; Thursday, 40 at Platteview near Bellevue for 23 spots; and Friday, four golfers at Scotts Bluff Country Club for two spots.

Quarry Oaks hosts PGA juniors

Iowa 2-A high school state champion Neil Malenke of Orange City and Omaha's Mark Stovie head the field for the boys 16-18 division at the Nebraska Section Junior PGA Championship at Quarry Oaks today and Wednesday.

In qualifying, Malenke shot 66 at Highlands in Lincoln and Stovie 67 at Stone Creek in Omaha. Taylor Hill of Treynor, Iowa, had the low score in girls 16-18 qualifying with a 73 at Tregaron in Bellevue.

Next week, the Nebraska Junior Amateur for boys and girls will be at Beatrice Country Club beginning Monday.
