Hole in One: Council Bluffs woman records ‘miracle' ace

Florence Rogers says there is only one way to describe her recent hole in one.

“That was a miracle,'' the 72-year-old Council Bluffs resident said. “I'm not that good of a golfer.''

Rogers sank her ace on the 125-yard No. 2 hole at Miller Park using a No. 1 club. Witnesses Cathy Tauke and Alice Lammert told Rogers that they thought the ball had rolled in.

“I said, ‘I won't believe it until I find it in the cup,''' Rogers said.

When she found it, she couldn't believe it. She and Tauke went to lunch to celebrate.

It was only Rogers' second time out because she has been substitute teaching at the Treynor elementary school on Tuesdays and wasn't able to compete in the women's league until school was over.

Rogers, who lost her husband Melvin 20 years ago, didn't start golfing until she was 60. She had been busy teaching and raising a family of two boys, so she didn't have time.

Since 2000, she'd only been golfing a couple of times a year until joining the women's league this year.

“I was just looking for something to do to keep me busy and keep me active. I like being out of doors,'' Rogers said. “Lots of ladies in Council Bluffs belong to Miller Park. It's really a nice course. It's nice and shady and just very pretty.''

Part of the reason for her limited schedule is Rogers' continued joy in teaching after 40 years of doing it fulltime. Plus, she's quite the world traveler.

She's been to Russia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, France, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. She also likes to take bus trips in the United States.

“You've got to do what you enjoy,'' she said, “because you never know when you won't be able to do it.''
