SCI-FI FESTIVAL: Check out the Omaha Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival, Friday through July 19, at the Comfort Inn and Suites at 70th and Grover Streets. “OSFest 2: Another Small Step” will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 space mission. The event will include assorted activities of interest to fans of science fiction and fantasy literature and media. Cost for a three-day pass is $40 at the door. BOOK SIGNINGS: Author Paul Bryant returns to his hometown this week for a presentation and book signing at Omaha’s downtown library.
Bryant’s book, “The Purpose Driven Leader,” explores the joys and pitfalls of purpose and destiny. Thursday’s event is from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the W. Dale Clark Library, 215 S. 15th St. The author returns for another signing from 6:30-7:30 p.m. July 22 at the Millard branch library, 13214 Westwood Lane. Both presentations are free and open to the public.
Iowa writer Sean Doolittle will be signing books and talking to fans at the Creighton University bookstore from noon to 2 p.m. July 23. Doolittle’s most recent novel, “Safer,” came out in February. His other titles include “The Cleanup,” “Raindogs” and “Dirt.”
Julie Kramer will sign copies of her latest mystery, “Missing Mark,” at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bookworm, in Countryside Village at 87th and Pacific Streets.
MEDICAL CONTRIBUTIONS: Transplant experts at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have contributed chapters to “Brown’s Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation 2009,” the fourth edition of a comprehensive reference book on stem cell research. They are Dr. James Armitage, Dr. Phyllis Warkentin, Dr. Philip Bierman and Dr. Peter Coccia. The book, published by Wiley-Blackwell, can be ordered at www.wiley.com.
