Longer furlough for Neb. meatpackers

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Furloughed workers from Premium Protein’s Hastings and Lincoln plants won’t be back on the job at least until July 28.

They’ve been off work since the second week of June, unpaid.

Managers originally told them they’d be back on June 25. But that date has been extended to July 28.

The company headquarters and a processing plant are based in Lincoln, but its slaughterhouse is in Hastings.

A company official said last month that relatively weak beef demand and export markets helped lead to the furloughs.

Premium Protein officials in Lincoln, and majority owner and private equity partner Matlin Patterson in New York have not responded to phone calls seeking comment.
