No crystal ball exists that will reveal the future of the label, but Saddle Creek’s Robb Nansel offered a few insights about where it’s heading:
The label has brought on six new artists and bands in the last year. And label executives don’t plan to slow down. “I would definitely say we’re always looking. We’ve been fortunate over the last year that we came across stuff that we were all excited about,” he said.
Saddle Creek formed around a circle of Omaha bands, but the label hasn’t signed anyone from town in quite a while. But it’s not that they don’t look at locals. “I guess it doesn’t really matter where they’re from,” Nansel said. “I think we’re conscious of keeping it changing and progressing and not trying to get stagnant. If a band’s from Omaha, that’s great ... It’s certainly not necessary.”
In general, Saddle Creek isn’t looking for any sound in particular — just things the label exectives enjoy. “It’s stuff that we like. Generally, that tends to be somewhat in the same genre,” Nansel said, then added, “I’d like to think that we could do just about anything as long as we’re intrigued by it.”
