John Hurley is one of 188 golfers playing today in open qualifying for the final 14 spots in the Cox Classic field.
Hurley, from O'Neill, Neb., was one stroke out of a playoff last year for the final qualifying spots at his site. The Texas A&M junior is coming off a tie for sixth at the national Players Amateur in South Carolina.
If Hurley qualifies for the Cox Classic, he will withdraw from the Nebraska Amateur that starts Tuesday at Ironwood Golf & Country Club. He won the state match-play title last month.
Hurley has an 8:20 a.m. tee time at Tiburon, one of the two qualifying courses. Seven spots are available there and seven at Yankee Hill in Lincoln, the first course outside the Omaha area to be used for a Cox Classic Monday qualifier.
Among the hopefuls are some local pros who have played previously in the Cox Classic: Ryan Vermeer (Millard South), A.J. Elgert of Lincoln, Judd Cornell of Omaha, Ted DiGiacomo of Papillion and Justin Herron of Omaha.
Another recognizable name is Joel Kribel, the 1997 U.S. Amateur winner who was Tiger Woods' teammate at Stanford.
Pro-am opens week
Today's Creighton University College of Business pro-am, for which foursomes paid $4,000 apiece, at 11:30 a.m. is the first event of tournament week.
Tonight is the volunteer appreciation party at the Champions Run pool house.
Tuesday is the Subway Family Fun Day, with a 10 a.m. youth clinic at the golf course's driving range. An autograph session will follow. Tickets for the free event are available at all Omaha-area Subway locations. — Stu Pospisil
