The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has been involved in the closings of 57 banks this year and, in most cases, other banks assumed all the deposits.
Did You Know? The FDIC receives no tax dollars. Its money comes from premiums paid by the 8,246 banks whose deposits it insures. It is backed by the federal government, however.
States with the most 2009 closings: Illinois, 12; Georgia, 10; and California, 8.
Cities with the most closings: Atlanta and Wilmington, N.C., 2 each.
States with no closings: 29, including Iowa.
