Budget highlights

Police

820 positions funded. A 24-member police recruit class to be held in May 2010. A 42-member recruit class, which has been delayed twice, will be in November. 44 new cruisers purchased at a cost of $1.5 million. Average mileage on cruisers is nearly 113,000.

Tourism

$500,000 in city funding for tourism promotion restored for 2010. City's allocation this year was cut to help address budget shortfall.

Libraries

Funding to buy materials will increase $180,000 to $1.69 million. Some of the extra funding will come from keno revenues.

Public safety auditor

$135,000 budgeted for auditor and part-time staff.

Fire | New fire station in Elkhorn at 202nd and Atlas Streets will open. Elkhorn Rural Fire District and a federal grant will pay the $775,000 in operating costs.

... and lowlights

Westwood Golf Course

Course near 132nd Street and West Center Road closes after this golf season, saving $160,000. Course could be turned into a disc golf course.

Police helicopters

Purchase of a third helicopter delayed from 2010 to 2011, saving $3.1 million. Two new helicopters were bought this year.

Street resurfacing

Funding to decline from $5.8 million to $2.8 million. Federal stimulus funding could make up some of difference.

Housing inspectors

Four of 14 positions eliminated, saving the city $233,000.
