WINNEBAGO

Powwow has contests in dancing and drumming

Bring the family out to experience the culture and artistry of Native American tribes during the 143rd Winnebago Powwow, today through Sunday near Winnebago, Neb.

Hundreds of participants from the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and other cultures will compete for $95,000 in prizes in a variety of singing, drumming and dance categories. The entire event is open and free to the public.

Grand entries — when all powwow participants enter the grounds together — take place at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today through Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The powwow commemorates the return of Chief Little Priest and Company “A” Fort Omaha Scouts, 34th Nebraska Volunteers.

The last true Winnebago war chief and other warriors enlisted in a Nebraska cavalry regiment out of Fort Omaha in 1863. Killed in a battle in 1866 with the Lakota, Chief Little Priest is buried near Winnebago.

The powwow grounds are at Veterans Memorial Park, 1.25 miles east of Winnebago on U.S. Highway 75, about 90 miles north of Omaha.
