Average temperature, July 2009 in Omaha, is running 4.9 degrees below normal.
Warmest day so far this month in Omaha: 87 degrees on July 7 and 14; lowest temperature: 53 degrees on July 18 and 19.
Record high for July in Omaha: 114 degrees on July 25, 1936
Record low for July in Omaha: 44 degrees on July 5, 1972.
Step outside baby. Real July weather is happening today.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 90 degrees for the first -- and last time -- this month in Omaha.
A cold front that is pushing through later today should return the area to the more placid weather that has become the norm this month -- just in time for another festival-packed weekend.
“It's going to be a nice weekend,” said Josh Boustead, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Boustead is forecasting a 93-degree high today; AccuWeather Inc. is forecasting the mercury to top out at 90 degrees.
Because July has been so cool -- Omaha's average temperature is running almost 5 degrees behind normal -- folks may think today feels warmer than it really is, Boustead said. The heat index is expected to be around 95 degrees.
If you've been missing the summer warmth and want to step outside in the heat of the day, shoot for about 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. Boustead said that's when the temperatures typically max out at this time of year.
A cold front is expected to push through this afternoon. So while temperatures going forward should be fairly seasonable, they aren't expected to hit 90 for at least a week, which puts the calendar close to August.
If the mercury doesn't reach the 90-degree point point Friday, the city will have set a new record, said Boustead. Omaha hasn't seen a July without at least one 90-degree day in 138 years of record-keeping.
A variety of activities offer free to low-cost outdoor fun:
Mutual of Omaha's Wild About Omaha weekend includes free admission to the Lauritzen Gardens and free concerts in the Holland Performing Arts Center's courtyard from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday. The Henry Doorly Zoo will be free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The West Pottawattamie County Fair runs through Sunday at Westfair, with admission charged.
The Cox Classic is bringing professional golf to Champions Run golf course. Admission is charged.
