Golf: McCook's Crick wins second title

Brandon Crick won his duel with John Hurley to claim his second Nebraska Amateur golf title in three years.

“It means a lot, especially the scores I shot,'' Crick said. “I played the most solid week of golf probably in my career.''

Crick closed with a 68 Friday at Ironwood to finish at 17-under 271, matching the second-lowest winning score in tournament history. He finished four strokes ahead of Hurley, who ended at 13 under after a final-round 71.

“I got off to a good start, 2 under after seven, and I'm one back at that point, but the double bogey I made on 8 killed me,'' Hurley said. “You can't make double when he makes only three bogeys all week.''

Crick bogeyed the hole, but increased his lead to two strokes. Hurley never got closer. Crick had three birdies on the back nine, nearly acing the par-3 17th.

This week was another chapter in memorable summers for both small-town golfers.

Crick, from McCook, was a semifinalist in the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship last week. The University of Nebraska senior had the best showing in a USGA event for a Nebraskan since 1976.

Hurley, from O'Neill, won the state match-play title — beating Crick 1-up in the semifinals — and earlier this month was sixth in the national Players Amateur in South Carolina. The Texas A&M junior played No. 3 for the Aggies' first national championship team in men's golf.

Theirs is a friendly rivalry. Their parents sometimes walk together on the course.

“There might have been a little less talking to do than yesterday,'' Crick said. “We're both competitive people, and we're out there trying to do our best.''

Ben Tewes of Lincoln, a former Southern Methodist golfer, shot 69 to take third place at 9 under, ahead of Andrew Storm of Omaha (73) at 7 under.

In all, the eight golfers who broke par 288 were the most for the championship since 11 broke par at Lochland in 1998, when Steve Friesen of Lincoln shot the tournament record of 21 under.
