Nebraskans volunteer in big way

LINCOLN (AP) — For the fourth straight year, Nebraskans had the second highest volunteerism rate in the nation.

A government survey released today shows almost 39 percent of Nebraskans volunteer. Only Utah residents ranked higher at 44 percent.

The Cornhusker state is second nationally with about 50 volunteer hours per resident and a 79-percent volunteer retention rate.

The report says an estimated 528,100 Nebraskans contribute about 67 million hours of service a year. Total value of Nebraska volunteerism is $1.4 billion.

The Corporation for National and Community Service puts out the annual report, which is based on U.S. Census Bureau data.
