To qualify for the rebate program, your clunker must:
Be a 1984 model or newer in “drivable” condition.
Get less than 18 mpg.
Have been owned, registered and insured by you for the past year.
Be destroyed by the dealer.
Your new vehicle must:
Have a suggested retail price of less than $45,000.
If a car, get at least 4 mpg better than the clunker you trade in. If a light truck or SUV, get at least 2 mpg better. The rebate size, from $3,500 to $4,500, depends on the size of the mileage improvement.
Be purchased by Nov. 1 or before the $1billion government fund — $3billion if Congress OKs a proposed expansion — is exhausted.
