Nebraska City plant cuts jobs

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska City plant that makes natural-gas meters says declining sales are forcing another layoff.

Elster American Meter says it is eliminating about 50 jobs at its Nebraska City plant.

In December, Elster cut 42 positions.

In a news release Monday, Elster senior vice president Bill Whitesel says the market for its products was not rebounding as fast as the company had hoped.

Whitesel said Tuesday that the latest layoffs take his payroll down to about 580 workers. He says the laid-off workers could be recalled if business were to pick back up.

The company is part of the Elster Group, which is based in Luxembourg.

On Monday, the U.S. Commerce Department said construction spending rose for the second time in three months in June.
