Profits at Windstream Communications fell 11 percent in the second quarter as revenue declined 6 percent with the continuing loss of land-line phone customers.

The Little Rock, Ark., company, which has extensive Nebraska telephone operations, reported Thursday it had profits of $90.8 million, or 21 cents a share, on revenue of $752.9 million in the quarter that ended June 30. In the April-June quarter last year, profits were $102 million, or 23 cents a share, on revenue of $799.9 million.

Windstream lost 85,000 more lines, a 5.5 percent drop, to 2.95 million between June 2008 and June of this year. It added 45,000 high-speed Internet lines as well as more satellite TV customers. Average service revenue per customer in the quarter was $80.41, 25 cents less than a year earlier.

Six-month results showed profits of $179 million, or 41 cents a share, on $1.51 billion in revenue. Year-earlier profits were $225.7 million, or 50 cents a share, on revenue of $1.6 billion.

Windstream is the dominant phone company in Lincoln and a wide area of southeast Nebraska. It also has operations, mostly serving businesses, in Omaha and several other Nebraska cities.
