Competency in question

>> Kevin Dix, a Nebraska inmate accused of beating another inmate to death in 2003, was found incompetent to stand trial in June 2006. Four months later, Dix was tried and found guilty of manslaughter. He is serving a 20-year sentence.

>> Melissa Riley, a woman accused of strangling another woman in 2002, was found not competent to stand trial in 2003 and 2005, when doctors determined she was paranoid-schizophrenic with an IQ that ranged from 64 to 75. A judge agreed with attorneys in 2005 that Riley likely would never be competent to stand trial.

>> In 1991, Roger Lade was released from the Lincoln Regional Center after 20 years there. A judge ruled that Lade no longer was a danger to himself or others. At 18, Lade was accused of shooting his stepfather in 1971. A judge originally ruled Lade was competent to stand trial, but eventually reversed his decision and determined that Lade was mentally ill.

>> David Morris, who was accused of shooting his neighbor in 1988, was found mentally incompetent to stand trial the next year. Morris told investigators he was Jesus Christ and killed his neighbor while acting against evil. In a 1990 trial, he was found not responsible by reason of insanity and was committed to the Lincoln Regional Center.
