SIDNEY, Neb. -- Cheyenne County law enforcement agencies have teamed up to form an elite unit for situations that require increased firepower or specialized tactics.

Sidney Police Chief Larry Cox said he and Cheyenne County Sheriff Darrell Johnson had been talking about forming a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Team for the past year.

"There have been times when we have found ourselves in need and on a time restraint, which has caused problems because we had to rely on the squads from Scottsbluff and North Platte to respond," Cox said.

The new team consists of six officers from the police department and six from the sheriff's department, with one from each serving as alternates. Cox said the officers in the SWAT unit just recently completed special training on location delivered by the Front Range Training Co. of Fort Collins, Colo.

"The purpose of the training was to enable officers to be able to respond immediately," Johnson said, "and to get the job done with the least amount of injuries as possible."
