Marvin C. Westcott, a Nebraska agribusinessman whose passions were hunting and railroads, has died of cancer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 71.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege.

Westcott served on the boards of several state and national fertilizer and wildlife conservation organizations.

He was a founding member and past president of Safari Club International’s Nebraska chapter. He restored the Holdrege train depot and displayed wildlife mounts.

“Marv was a community leader whose success recruited other businesses to Holdrege, but his passion for hunting and the outdoors was tremendous,’’ said James Ziebarth of Wilcox, chairman of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Westcott, who died Monday, served on the commission from 2000 to 2005.

“Marv’s service to the Game and Parks Commission centered on an unrelenting passion for Nebraska’s outdoor recreational resources,’’ said Rex Amack, director. “Regardless of the size or scope of the issue at hand, Marv’s approach was always results-oriented, with all hands on deck.”

A Lincoln native, Westcott grew up in Holdrege and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in agronomy and chemistry.

He was a Navy officer and worked for Cargill Inc. until buying an interest in Holdrege Seed & Farm Supply Co. in 1965. He ranched after selling the company.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki, of Holdrege; daughters Shawna Forsberg of Omaha and Elizabeth Dressler of Denver; son Shane Westcott of Holdrege; and five grandchildren. Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
