Bridge will close for construction

WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

Motorists will make their final trip across the Missouri River using the Veterans Memorial Bridge at 9 a.m. on Sept. 8.

The bridge, formerly known as the South Omaha Bridge, is being closed so workers can complete its four-lane replacement, said Department of Roads spokesman Karl Burns. The new bridge is being built just north of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, which is scheduled for demolition.

On the Omaha side of the river, the new bridge will connect to the intersection of 13th Street and Missouri Avenue, just as the Veterans Memorial Bridge does. On the Iowa side, it will line up with a four-lane road nearing completion in Council Bluffs.

Traffic will be detoured to Interstate 80.

The closure is expected to last nine months, with the opening of the new bridge scheduled for June 2010.

“It’s on schedule,” Burns said.
