    Matt O'Hanlon

Football: Catching up with Matt O'Hanlon

    Position: Safety

    Height, weight: 5-11, 200

    Class: Senior

    Hometown: Bellevue

Notable: O'Hanlon started the first nine games next to Larry Asante at safety last year, before he began splitting time at his position with Rickey Thenarse. But O'Hanlon's season highlight came on the second-to-last play, when he made a game-saving deflection in the end zone and preserved Nebraska's 26-21 Gator Bowl win over Clemson.

Q: You missed a little time during preseason camp about a week ago. What was up?

A: I pulled my hamstring. I was out for three days.

    Q: Are you healthy now?

    A: Yep.

Q: You used to be a running back at Bellevue East, right?

A: A wingback. We ran a wing-T offense. I started at quarterback my sophomore and junior year, and going into my senior year, we didn't have too many wingbacks. All we did was hand the ball off, so I just went to my coach and I asked (to move). We never threw the ball, so quarterback was the same thing as running back. I played like half and half.

Q: Do you ever miss that, running with the football?

A: Yeah, at times I do. But I could never run the football at this level. I don't miss it too much.

    Q: Aren't you a graduate student now?

A: Sort of. I graduate in December, but I'm taking grad classes too now.

    Q: What are you pursuing?

A: I'm going to be a special ed teacher. I should be done by next December. I'll be teaching two springs from now.

Q: The Blackshirts. It's a topic that the coaches don't touch at this point of the year, but do the players bring it up?

A: I don't think there's really been any discussion about it yet. Last year, I didn't get one. The guys didn't get them until three-quarters through the season. I have no idea when we'll get them. I don't know if it'll be next week. I don't know if it'll be four weeks from now. I'm not really worried about it.
