Prizes will be awarded for the best costume and the best mud-pit entry.

Fun awaits competitors at third Mud Run

Walk it. Run it.

Better yet, crawl through it.

Mud Run is back.

Soaring Wings Vineyard near Springfield will host the third annual race through mud on Sunday.

Scott Ash of the Nebraska Sports Council expects 800 people to tramp through the gooey obstacle course. Last year, about 600 people stomped through it.

“It's all about the fun,” Ash said. “I think we had 300 people do it the first year. Each year, it doubles. It's just a matter of people having a good time. Yes, it's exercise. And yes, it's a little strenuous, but at the end of the day it's fun.”

Some runners — as young as 4 on up to those in their 70s — dress in costumes. It's not unusual to see a muddy bride or a “Wizard of Oz” character trudging along.

A DJ will spin jams. Local vendors will be selling barbecue, and a wine tasting will take place later in the day.

A mini-Mud Run will kick off at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K Mud Run at 10:30 a.m. Both courses feature a 30-meter mud pit near the finish.

Prizes are awarded for best costume, age-group winners and best mud-pit entry. A guy dressed in a baby blue tuxedo with a cigar in his mouth won last year's contest.

“How often do adults get to go diving in a pit of mud for no other reason than saying they did it?” Ash asked.

“It's gooey, swampy fun.”
