Volleyball: Cougars open tourney strong

SALT LAKE CITY — The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team cruised to four wins in the opening day of the Salt Lake Invite on Friday.

The No. 2 Cougars improved to 8-0 with the four wins.

“Everyone played pretty well for us today. Things couldn't have gone much better,” WNCC assistant coach Nicole Gonzalez said. “All of the teams in this tournament are tough. We hope to have another good day on Saturday.”

WNCC will open the bracket-play portion of the tournament today at 10:30 a.m. against Salt Lake Community College.

In Friday's pool play, the Cougars opened with a 25-18, 19-25, 15-6 win over the College of Eastern Utah. Kaleinani Kabalis led WNCC in hitting with 13 kills. She also had nine points and five digs. Kathryn Stock totaled nine kills, nine digs, two aces and six points, while Sabina Piegza finished with 21 set assists and two blocks. Kuulei Kabalis had 11 digs.

The Cougars followed with a 25-10, 25-17 thumping of Jefferson College (Mo.). Kaleinani Kabalis finished with 11 kills and five digs, Piegza had 23 assists, Brooke Blomenkamp had six kills, Kuulei Kabalis totaled nine points and seven digs and Emily Hoehn had six points.

Kaleinani Kabalis put down 11 kills and totaled nine digs in WNCC's 25-12, 25-21 win over Illinois Central. Piegza had 18 assists and five points, while Stock had seven digs and six points. Blomenkamp had six kills and Kuulei Kabalis had eight digs and five points.

In its final match, WNCC earned a 25-19, 25-12 win over North Idaho College. Kaleinani Kabalis again led the Cougars in hitting with seven kills. She also had two aces and three points. Piegza dished out 15 assists and had four digs, while Kuulei Kabalis finished with 11 digs and seven points.
