Roy toys
Roy Helu had a terrific start. It was hard to know what to expect because he was never the feature back last year. Helu seemed comfortable in the role. The only thing missing was his patented hurdle over a defender. As he showed on his 44-yard touchdown run, he may have switched from hurdles to sprints this year.
Crick makes his mark
Jared Crick had a good debut, even blocking a field goal. I'm sure Crick will hear about his roughing the quarterback penalty that nullified a Matt O'Hanlon interception. But what the heck, Crick is trying to prove himself. It was good to see someone getting pressure.
Big man moving fast
Ndamukong Suh had seven tackles, but by far the most impressive was when he ran 7 yards downfield on third down to tackle an Owl 1 yard short of a first down. That's an All-America play.
Home improvements
The stadium looked great. The ribbon scoreboards weren't a distraction and blended in well. That's a nice addition, especially showing the constant score updates. Added bonus: Those “Power of Red'' signs from the Steve Pederson era are history. Is that slogan finally gone from the Big Red vernacular? We can only hope.
Howard takes a hit
When Howard Schnellenberger went down hard on the sideline late in the game, I thought the man's career might end in Lincoln, Neb. And how ironic would that have been?
