Crescent project at halfway point

World-Herald News Service

CRESCENT, Iowa — The “Eagles of Honor Project” of Pottawattamie County will pass the halfway mark Saturday. The eighth bronze eagle, “Road to Honor,” will be unveiled in Crescent.

Created by bronze sculptor Russell Christensen of Neola, the 42-inch eagle has been customized for Crescent. A road lined with trees winds up the eagle’s torso to a Pottawattamie-shaped sign bearing the message: “Crescent, Iowa. Where the road of honor runs deep within Pottawattamie County.”

The Pottawattamie County Board has approved $25,000 to each city to commission an eagle.

The project began in 2007, when Neola, Minden and Underwood set a goal of erecting monuments to war veterans. Christensen envisioned bronze eagles stretching across Pottawattamie County as a united sign of gratitude to veterans from the communities.

“Road of Honor” will be unveiled at 11 a.m. in Veterans Monument Park one mile south of Crescent. Woodmen of the World Lodges donated three flagpoles for the monument. The next eagle, “Branches of Honor,” will be unveiled on Veterans Day in Oakland.
