NU STAR
Prince Amukamara showed his play-making ability all over the field. The speedy junior produced the Huskers' first sack of the season on a cornerback blitz during Arkansas State's opening possession. Amukamara also did well in defending the pass, finishing with a team-high two breakups, and he recorded seven tackles.
HIGHLIGHT
The game was not quite decided early in the third quarter when Nebraska linebacker Blake Lawrence plugged a hole with authority, slamming ASU back Derek Lawson for no gain on a second-and-2 play. Arkansas State, trailing 24-6 at the time, failed on third down and then punted to Nebraska, which scored in four plays to end any chance of a Red Wolves' comeback.
BUSTED PLAY
Arkansas State quarterback Corey Leonard found a big seam in the defense, completing a 43-yard strike to freshman tight end Kedric Murray in the third quarter. The pass sailed down the middle of the field, and Murray nearly left safety Matt O'Hanlon and Lawrence in his dust. O'Hanlon dived to trip Murray and prevent a touchdown, and ASU turned it over on downs four plays later.
OUR TAKE
It was a mixed bag for the Blackshirts, who dominated statistically but left Memorial Stadium with feelings of dissatisfaction after the Red Wolves produced 18 plays of 8 yards or longer. Arkansas State gained 274 yards overall while presenting some challenges with a dual-threat quarterback and a strong group of running backs. Still, the Huskers have plenty to refine before their first big test at Virginia Tech.
