Before the experiment
Jennifer and Eric Peters estimate they spent about $910 per month on groceries and restaurants before they decided to change their habits. Here’s the breakdown:
$120 — Lunches out for Jennifer, three times a week
$240 — Dining out as a couple, two or three times a week
$500 — Spending $100 to $150 per week at the grocery store
$50 — Miscellaneous expenses for entertaining two or three times a month
After the experiment
The couple made the food in their pantry last for four months with a few supplements. When they made their first grocery run after the pantry challenge ended on Labor Day weekend, they spent $50 for a week’s worth of groceries and supplies.
They don’t yet have a budget for food. They’re still determined to use the last remnants in their pantry.
What they sold
Eric and Jennifer made $600 selling used household items during their food challenge. They used the money for perishables and other household supplies from the supermarket and occasional gas fill-ups. Here’s what they sold and what they got for the goods:
$200 at a garage sale including miscellaneous items
$50 total for Eric’s two guitars
$75 for a camcorder
$50 for a digital camera
$125 for furniture in their basement
$25 for Jennifer’s bike
$75 in gift cards
