Current OPS college-credit options

Metro area students have several ways to earn college credit during their high school years. The Omaha district is considering two more. Among options for students:

Advanced Placement: Colleges often award credit to students who earn a score of three, four or five out of five on an AP exam. Metro area schools offer a varied number of AP courses.

Dual Credit: Several metro area schools have relationships with local colleges to offer both high school and college credit for some courses, such as in math or economics.

Academy Programs: Some districts offer specialty programs that allow students to earn certificates — such as a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate — during the school year.

Bridge to Success: This Omaha district program allows students at Omaha high schools to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earn dual credits while on campus.

The Omaha district's proposal would add International Baccalaureate and the option of earning an Associate of Arts degree during high school. Students who earn certain scores on their IB exams can earn sophomore standing at college. An associate's degree often is enough credit for junior standing.
