Health-care shortage looms in Neb.

Nebraska will face a growing shortage of medical professionals within the next 10 years, primarily because of increasing retirements, according to a report released Tuesday by the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Keith Mueller, associate professor in UNMC's College of Public Health, said the problem is especially severe in some of the state's least populated counties.

Mueller recommended creating a state health workforce center, ongoing collection of data on the problem, programs to get young people interest in health care professions and other strategies.
