Alegent hospitals fare well in ratings

By Michael O’Connor
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Four Alegent Health hospitals were among six in Nebraska that scored above average in overall quality of care on a new Web site that rates hospitals nationally. The remaining Nebraska hospitals that were evaluated ranked average.

Dr. Archelle Georgiou, a health care consultant in Minneapolis, developed the ratings based on 43 measures of patient satisfaction and quality using federal data. The measures involved the treatment of such conditions as heart disease and pneumonia.

Her analysis for Nebraska was limited. It covered the 19 hospitals that Georgiou determined had sufficient federal data to be ranked. Many of Nebraska’s largest were included. Georgiou is a former insurance company medical officer.

The ratings are available on MyHealthCompare.com. She said the Web site enables consumers to make side-by-side comparisons that are easy to understand.

The Alegent hospitals that ranked above average were Midlands Hospital, Lakeside Hospital, Immanuel Medical Center and Bergan Mercy Medical Center. Two other Nebraska hospitals ranking above average were the Fremont Area Medical Center and Nebraska Heart Hospital.
