LINCOLN — Collins Okafor, the former Omaha Westside standout, rejoined the Nebraska football team Thursday, a day after quitting.
The redshirt freshman I-back was not available for interviews after practice. Coach Bo Pelini didn't address Okafor's status during post-practice comments with reporters, but NU media relations director Keith Mann confirmed that Okafor has rejoined the team.
Okafor, a two-time All-Nebraska player, was a member of the Huskers' scout team during his redshirt season. This year he's working behind at least four other players at I-back.
Final preparations
Nebraska will complete its final pregame walkthrough in Lincoln, saving its in-person introduction to Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium for game day.
Pelini said the plan is for the team to review its game plan today before taking a charter flight to Virginia. Pregame meetings at the team hotel are scheduled.
And there are still a few things that Pelini would like to get fixed, even though he said Thursday that this week's practices have gone well. He is looking forward to Saturday.
“We feel good about where we are,” Pelini said. “We'll find out where we are on Saturday. These are the fun ones to play in. It'll be a good test to see how far we've come and where we are.”
No injuries should keep any Husker from playing Saturday, Pelini said.
Ready for no-huddle
The Huskers have been preparing for no-huddle offenses since August, so defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said his unit should do fine if Virginia Tech decides to speed things up.
The Hokies tend to be conventional on offense, but Pelini said he's noticed opposing defenses scrambling at times on film. Even if the Hokies choose to huddle, they might look to the sideline and make some last-second changes, according to Pelini.
Nebraska's defense is ready to work quickly, though, he said.
“We've got to be prepared for all that,” Pelini said. “That's something we've been working on since camp started. I'm not too worried about that.”
Pelini dealt with some malfunctioning equipment against Florida Atlantic, the one occasion that he remembers his defense noticeably out of position before a snap. For the most part, he said the players have lined up properly so far.
“When we've had the signals in on time, our guys have done fine,” Pelini said.
