Life-A-Thon raises awareness

Family and friends walked Saturday in memory of Justin Pyzdek, 21, who died after a car crash two years ago. His organs were donated to help others.

A Kansas man received Pyzdek’s liver. The man’s daughter recently contacted Pyzdek’s mother to let her know.

“I feel like my son is with me,” Dina Merrick said Saturday. “I’m glad to know that when you bury your child there is still a part of them here.”

The annual Life-A-Thon walk, sponsored by the Nebraska Medical Center, was held at Wehrspann Lake at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area.

Those taking part had the option of bicycling, competing in a 10K run, in-line skating or walking around the lake to help raise awareness about organ and tissue donation.

The event featured face painting, pony rides, clowns and a LifeNet helicopter on display.

Pyzdek, whose survivors include his 4-year-old daughter, Kaydence, was a 2004 graduate of Bellevue West High School.

He died in March 2007 following a two-car crash near 120th Street and Miracle Hills Drive.
