Man who fell at State Fair dies

A 41-year-old Alvo, Neb., man who was critically injured when he fell from the grandstand during a car race at the Nebraska State Fair died Saturday at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.

Greg Cooper suffered head injuries after falling about 20 feet from the second-floor concessions area Sept. 4 at the fair’s grandstand.

His family announced his death on a Web site for hospital patients. The notice said funeral services for were pending.

Cooper raced in the Pro-Am division at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Neb. He won the Rookie of the Year award in the Pro-Am division in 2002. He finished eighth in the point standings in that division in 2009, despite missing the season finale.

A benefit fund to assist the family has been set up at TierOne Bank, and deposits may be made at any branch or mailed to: Greg Cooper Benefit Fund, TierOne Bank, P.O. Box 83009, Lincoln, NE 68508.

Cooper is survived by his wife, Kelly; daughter, Melissa; parents, Dick and Mary Cooper of Arizona; and two brothers and two sisters.
