Scammers target veterans' plastic

By Bob Glissmann
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Scammers are trying to get veterans’ credit-card numbers over the phone by claiming they need to update Veterans Affairs prescription information.

“The VA is never going to ask a veteran for their credit-card number for prescriptions — or anything, for that matter,” said Will Ackerman, a VA spokesman for Nebraska and western Iowa.

Representatives from veterans service organizations across the country have told the VA about the attempts. The scammers say the VA recently changed procedures for dispensing prescriptions, so they need a credit-card number.

Ackerman said he knew of no one in Nebraska or western Iowa who had fallen prey to the scammers.

Veterans with questions about VA services should contact the Nebraska-Western Iowa VA Medical Center at (800) 451-5796.
