Workshop focuses on safety, home-buying

Learn about safety and buying a home for the first time at a free workshop Tuesday.

The workshop will be in the west atrium of the Durham Outpatient Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the focus will be on the federal tax credit for buying a home. From 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., the focus will be on personal safety and crime prevention.

Outstanding young Omahans sought

The Omaha Jaycees want to know about outstanding young Omahans.

Nominations for the 77th Annual Ten Outstanding Young Omahans Awards are open through Oct. 1. Nominees must be between 21 and 40 and must exemplify excellence in both professional and personal arenas while taking an active role in giving back to the community.

Winners will be announced and honored at a Jan. 27 banquet.

Omaha a stop on Michigan Scouts’ trip

Michigan Boy Scouts on a 45,000-mile, year-long road trip are stopping this afternoon at the Durham Scout Center, 12401 West Maple Road.

The “A Century of Values” journey began Feb. 8 in Laingsburg, Mich. Fourteen road teams of Michigan Scouts plan to visit every U.S. Boy Scout Council by the centennial anniversary, Feb. 8, 2010.

Family activities that are open to the public are planned from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the center.

Vote for bands to play at July 2 concert

Bank of the West Celebrates America, a free concert and fireworks finale in Memorial Park, will mark its 20th anniversary July 2. To mark the occasion, the bank wants the public to help pick the bands.

Online voting will run through Oct. 2 at www.CelebratesAmerica.com.

Vote once. Choose one band from Group A or two bands from Group B.

Group A: Boston; Chicago; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Hall and Oates; Huey Lewis; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Michael McDonald; Steve Miller; and ZZ Top.

Group B: 38 Special, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, Little Feat, Orleans and Styx.

The performers will be announced next spring.
