    CROSS COUNTRY

Portofee, Moseman run away with titles

Marcus Portofee and Jessica Moseman prepped for next week's state cross country “preview meet” by winning comfortably Tuesday at the Omaha Creighton Prep Invitational.

The victory margin for each senior on a near-ideal day for running at Elmwood Park was slightly under eight seconds.

Portofee, from Class A Papillion-La Vista South, and Moseman, from Class B Plattsmouth, will be among the favorites Monday at the four-class University of Nebraska at Kearney Invitational on the state meet course at Kearney Country Club.

Portofee said he was running against Papillion-La Vista's Marshall Anderson, who finished fourth, until pulling away on the final downhill leading back into the park on the boys' 4,000-meter course.

“I got beat running down the final straightaway here last year,'' Portofee said. “I was determined not to let that happen this year.''

Matt Holcomb of Ralston was second and Zach Parshall of Plattsmouth third. Omaha Creighton Prep won the boys team title, 74-75 over Plattsmouth, for the first time since 1997.

Moseman finished ahead of three runners from girls champion Papillion-La Vista South. Kelsey Green was second, Mikayla Peck third and Sydney Gress fourth as the Titans outdistanced runner-up Omaha Burke 26-69.

Moseman, who never had finished better than fifth in the Prep meet, said she got a push from Green before pulling away on the final loop of the 3,000-meter course.
