MINDEN, Neb. — The Pitch 'n' Putt miniature-golf course in Minden will soon become city property.
The Minden City Council, at a meeting this week, moved to accept an offer from owners Pat and Darla Haight and Glen Haselbarth to give the course to the city, City Clerk Jami Maendele said.
The Haights have been leasing the land from Haselbarth and running the course on the north side of Minden for the last 16 years but said it is no longer profitable.
“Business has been down for a number of years, and expenses are up,” Pat Haight said. “They've raised taxes on us again, and so it just wasn't worth the amount of time we were putting into it.
“It really wouldn't pay for us to sell it to somebody because I don't think they could make it or get more people to come either.”
Maendele said the city agreed to take ownership of the course, which is across the street from the Pioneer Village campground, on a two-year trial basis.
After that time, if the golf course isn't working, the city will make the land into a park.
Maendele said few specifics on the golf course's operations have been worked out, but a formal agreement will be presented at the council's next meeting.
The Haights said whatever happens, they would like to see the course remain open.
“It's got 18 holes and almost new carpet on it, and we would hate to see it just disappear. But we have to get out of it,” Pat Haight said.
