Dolls, toys and bears, oh my!

Collectible dolls and toys will be displayed and be for sale at the Omaha Doll, Toy and Bear Show Sunday

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the show will be at the Firefighters Union Hall, 60th and Grover Streets.

The dolls and toys will range from Barbies to antiques to reproductions to modern artist creations.

Doll-making supplies and doll clothing also will be available. Some doll repairs will be done on site, too, and valuations of antique dolls and toys will be available.

Admission is free for those 10 and younger and $3 for everyone else.

Antique farm equipment on display

Check out more than 125 antique tractors and other farm equipment at the Elkhorn Valley Antique Power Association's 13th Annual Antique Tractor and Farm Machinery Display Show Saturday and Sunday.

The show will be in the parking lot of Vala's Pumpkin Patch, 12102 S. 180th St., near Gretna. The pumpkin patch is on 180th Street a mile south of Nebraska 370.

Show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughout the two-day event, association members will conduct working demonstrations of vintage farm equipment. There will be threshing, straw baling and lumber-sawing equipment in operation. Children's activities also will be part of the festivities.

See Bluffs history during walking tour

Take a free walking tour of the proposed Glen and Park Avenue Historic District in Council Bluffs at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Meet in the parking lot of St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1 Bluff St,, for the tour, sponsored by the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County in collaboration with the Council Bluffs Historic Preservation Alliance.

The tour kicks off the society's fall lecture series.

The proposed historical district contains a wealth of historic architecture and the homes of some of the most prominent Council Bluffs residents of the 19th century.

Red Oak Civil Air Patrol plans open house

The Des Moines Metro Cadet Squadron — Red Oak Detachment of the Civil Air Patrol will host an open house at the Red Oak Airport on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public and features a meet and greet with members of the Red Oak Detachment and their families, a question-and-answer session and a special recognition of recent promotions and awards.

Parkinson's conference at Creighton on Oct. 9

Creighton University will hold its sixth annual Parkinson's Progress conference Oct. 9 at the Omaha Marriott Hotel, 10220 Regency Circle.

The conference will include two tracks — one designed for health care providers, the other for patients, families and caregivers.

Topics will include the roles and benefits of speech, physical and occupational therapies and pain control.

Registration is $20 per person for patients, family and caregivers.

Conference sponsors are Creighton University's School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine and the Continuing Medical Education Division, in conjunction with the American Parkinson Disease Association and Creighton University Medical Center.

5K run/walk planned at Hitchcock Nature Center

Run or walk a 5K at Hitchcock Nature Center on Oct. 10.

The Hitchcock 5K Trail Run and Walk begins at 9 a.m. All pre-registered participants will receive a T-shirt, post-race snacks and beverages.

Trophies will be given to the top female and male runners, and the top female and male runners in each age group also will receive an award.

Hitchcock Nature Center is off the Old Lincoln Highway, five miles north of Crescent, Iowa, at 27792 Ski Hill Loop, in Honey Creek, Iowa.

Volunteers 65 and older eligible for awards

Nonprofit organizations in Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington Counties are invited to nominate their most dedicated volunteers age 65 and older for the Humana Starlight Award.

Nominees will be evaluated by local judges on the dedication and leadership they have demonstrated, as well as the impact their volunteer efforts have had on others in the community.

Humana will present a one-time grant of $10,000 to the qualifying nonprofit organization of the Starlight Award recipient's choice.
