My Five: Thomas Wilkins

Thomas Wilkins is like the Tiger Woods of classical music, a big talent with a mean baton backswing and follow-through.

Golf is one of the Omaha Symphony music director's many passions. The maestro, who is opening the symphony's 2009-10 season this weekend at the Holland Performing Arts Center, is especially fond of these five things:

Childhood picture of Sheri-Lee, his wife of 24 years.

“It already shows her bright, positive personality.”

Toy bear, given to him by his twins, Erica and Nicole, when they were 7 years old.

“They're now 17 and want the car.”

7-iron.

“Every golfer has a favorite club, and this one has gotten me out of a lot of jams.”

iPhone.

“I have all my music on it.”

“Leadership Prayers” by Richard Kriegbaum.

Wilkins finds inspiration in these poems about leadership and its challenges. He also keeps his own leadership journal.
