Why gather?

Nebraska naturalist Kay Young weighs in.

Flavor: "I can't buy anything in the store that tastes like chokecherries. I can't buy anything in the store that compares to a paw-paw. There's quite a bit you have to know to eat a paw-paw without getting sick. But it's worth it."

Health: "I think I feel better when I eat some of these plants."

Connections: “There's other things going on when families gather these things together: They build closer relationships while doing the busiwork of gathering, cleaning and cooking something from scratch. You also get a sense of the seasons, a sense of perspective about your place in a world that keeps going: Even if something really bad happens, there will be nettles in the spring and wild plums in August.”
